Scalpers will receive own tickets in Rosemont
Scalpers, beware.
Rosemont is taking a new approach to nabbing those trying to make more than face value on event tickets at Allstate Arena and the Rosemont Theatre.
Under new rules approved Wednesday, officers will be able to confiscate the tickets and issue a citation carrying a $75 fine.
Scalpers previously could be arrested under a state law, but that made it more complicated to prosecute those caught in the act, said Peter Rosenthal, a village attorney.
Those ticketed as suspected scalpers will be given an administrative hearing date at village hall where they can contest the fine.
"Now, it's simplifying it so our police can issue a ticket on the site," Mayor Bradley Stephens said.
Officers would get identification from the scalpers to issue the tickets and be able to track down scofflaws.
Rosemont officials said scalping isn't a major problem, but it does happen.
Public safety officers can catch suspects by looking at the warning signs.
"If someone walks away with a big smile on their face, (officers) find out how much was paid," Stephens said.
