Briefs: Buffalo Grove bank robbed

A man robbed the National City Bank in Buffalo Grove Tuesday afternoon. Police said about 3:10 p.m., a man in his 20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 180 pounds and wearing a brown coat and black and white Chicago White Sox cap entered the bank at 1177 W. Lake Cook Road. He demanded money, showed he had a gun in his waistband and then left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. Police said he could have entered a waiting maroon sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable, and went east on Lake-Cook Road. Anyone with information can call police at (847) 459-2560.

Assessment meeting today

Hanover Township will host a workshop at 6:30 this evening on the recent property reassessment notices sent to residents . The workshop will be held at the township offices at 250 S. Route 59 in Bartlett. Township Assessor Thomas Smogolski, Cook County Assessor Jim Houlihan and Cook County Commissioner Timothy Schneider are to discuss the impact of the proposed assessments and appeal procedures. The deadline to file an appeal for Hanover Township property is Jan. 18. The assessor's office hours have also been extended to 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Jan. 17 to accommodate those filing appeals. For more information, call (630) 837-0301.

Project closer to fruition:

Des Plaines aldermen late Monday approved preliminary plans for a new development featuring 121 townhouses and 102 condos. The Lexington Woods development, which is a Lexington Homes plan, will be built at 2200 E. Golf Road at the old United Stationers site. First Ward Alderman Patricia Beauvais and 6th Ward Alderman Mark Walsten voted against the plan. Beauvais wants to see more parking, and Walsten wants the project to be more environmentally friendly. The final plan also will require the council's approval.

Meet some candidates:

The Wheeling Township Democrats will host Anita Alverez, a candidate for Cook County state's attorney, at 7 tonight at the group's headquarters, 1310 W. Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights. Several candidates for circuit court judge will also attend.
