High tech TV: Rob Schulrz of Inspired Electronics presents a program on the variety of options for upgrading your TV, including plasma, high def, big screen, and flat panel at 7 p.m. Thursday. Jazz in January: An afternoon concert of jazz favorites will be performed by pianist, composer and conductor Larry Brent at 2 p.m. Sunday. Included will be selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber and more at this free event. Tax help: For seniors aged 60 and older, there are free income tax counseling appointments with IRS-trained AARP tax aides. Sign up at the Reception desk, (847) 392-0100, or online at www.ahml.info. Appointments are available Mondays, Feb. 11-April 14 at 9, 10, or 11 a.m. in the Hendrickson Room.

On Tuesday, a program on "Tax Forms and Preparation" will be presented at 7 p.m. by tax experts from R. J. Augustine and Associates CPA firm. Preschool info night: Parents are invited to the "Preschool Information Night" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 16, in the Hendrickson Room. This is an open house format for adults to meet teachers and day care providers from more than 20 local programs. Drop in; no registration needed.

"Eragon" book club: Readers, ages 11 and up, are invited to the new popular book discussion on "Eragon," by Christopher Paolini. The group meets from 3 to 4:40 p.m. Sundays in the Lindsey program room. Register at the Reception desk, (847) 392-0100 or visit www.ahml.info.

Reading is magnetic: The Kids' World "Reading is Magnetic" program invites kids to earn magnets by reading books from 16 different categories. Kids from infancy to grade school can pick up a reading log at the Kids' World Desk, or register on the bookmobile. Kids who are not old enough to read may be read to by an adult or older child. This free reading enrichment program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library

Download books: More than 800 audio books and 500 ebooks are now available to download with an Arlington Heights library card from www.ahml.info under "My Media Mall." Cardholders can check out up to 5 books at a time for 21 days. When the loan period expires, the "digital" books are automatically returned so there are never any late fees. To download these books, patrons will need their library card number, a PC, and free reader software that can be downloaded from the My Media Mall site.

Express Reserve: Reserve books, videos or DVDs online in the library's catalog at www.ahml.info. Patrons will be notified when the item is ready for pick up at the Express Reserve Pickup behind the Returns desk near the first floor elevators. If picking up an item for a family member, please bring the library card of the person who placed the reserve for verification and checkout. This service is for all reserves except interlibrary loans, which must continue to be picked up at the Checkout desk.

E-books for kids: Looking for a fun reading experience for your child? See the TumbleBook Library, a new link of the Kids' World section on the library's Web site at www.ahml.info. There are animated picture books with narration and highlighted phrases that allow children to follow along with the reading. Categories include story books, books for early readers, and books in other languages.

Go wireless: Take advantage of the library's free wireless Internet access using a laptop you can check out in the library, or your own wireless laptop or PDA. You'll have access to the world wide Web, the library catalog, subscription databases, and your library account records. Notary public service: You can get documents notarized at the library Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Administration Office on the second level. Appointments are not necessary, but you will need to bring a driver's license or state ID with a photo or a passport. Documents must be signed in the presence of the notary public to be notarized. World languages: Adult patrons looking for a Polish newspaper, a Russian movie, a book in Japanese, can find them in the World Languages section located around the corner from the Dunton Avenue entrance. This collection of about 2,000 items includes books, newspapers, magazines, videos, books on cassette, and soon-to-be-added DVDs.

Using the Arlington Heights census data complied in 2000, the Library has focused on Spanish, Russian, Polish, Korean, and Japanese materials and also recently added books in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Ukrainian. The World Languages collection also includes books in French, Italian, Greek, German, Hungarian, and Farsi.
