These kids should be learning English

To the editor: School District 59's preschool program at Ridge School for 3- and 4-year-olds is being taught 100 percent in Spanish. Why?

This was news to me as a taxpayer, and questionable to me as a retired educator.

Little children are like sponges and this is the time to include them in developing the "blending" of their culture into our American culture.

Language development and reading comprehension are the eventual roads to their future success.

They are being taught words like "azul," "negro," "amarillo" and "rojo." If they're learning a "word" why can't it be in English?

I should think their parents (who probably also struggle with English) would be offended if they understood their children were essentially being discriminated against by not being allowed to enter the introductory world of English in their adopted country.
