Register for programs at the adult reference desk or call the library. Patrons must register in person for programs requiring a fee. Programs may be canceled due to lack of registration.

Those requiring special accommodations to attend any library programs should contact community services two weeks in advance.

Winter book buddies: Winter book buddies will begin at 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Mondays, today to Jan. 28.

Try a new version of the popular Book Buddy program.

Experienced readers in sixth through eighth grades will buddy up with beginning readers in first through third grades to encourage and practice reading.

All buddies sign up for a specific time and meet at the library once a week for 30 minutes. This is a four-week commitment. Space is limited. Register in person.

Youth Services Storytime: Registration for winter storytimes has begun. Children must meet the age requirement by today. All programs except the Wednesday night Family Drop-In require registration, which can be done in person or over the phone.

• Storytime for 3-year-olds and a caregiver: 7 p.m. Mondays, today to Feb. 11; 1 p.m. Tuesdays, this Tuesday to Feb. 12; 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, this Wednesday to Feb. 13; and 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, this Thursday to Feb. 14.

• Storytime for 4- and 5-year-olds: 1 p.m. Mondays, today to Feb. 11; 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, this Tuesday to Feb. 12; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, this Wednesday to Feb. 13; 7 p.m. Thursdays, this Thursday to Feb. 14.

• Family Storytime: Register up to three children from one family between 2 years old and kindergarten. 10:30 a.m. Mondays, today to Feb. 11; 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, this Tuesday to Feb. 12; 1 p.m. Thursdays, this Thursday to Feb. 14.

• Family Drop In Storytime: 7 p.m. Wednesdays, this Wednesday to Feb. 13.

Internet for Beginners: Internet for Beginners will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Join an enjoyable and instructive lesson on basic Internet searching. Register at the adult reference desk or by calling (847) 356-7711.

Movies travelogue: Vacations, Locations and the Movies, a travelogue by Richard Klein, will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Visit the locations of some of Hollywood's classic films such as "Some Like it Hot," "Anatomy of a Murder" "Night of the Iguana" and more. Discover the special relationship between movies and their locations.

Wednesday Afternoon Club: All first-, second- and third-graders are invited to join the club to hear stories, laugh and be creative while sharing books, poems, riddles and jokes. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, this Wednesday through Feb. 13.

Conquering clutter: Join Randy Wickstrom, professional organizer with Purple Durple Organizers, as he gives the tips and techniques for getting and staying organized at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Special performers: These programs are free and fill quickly. Tickets are required for all adults and their accompanying children 2 years old and older.

Tickets can be acquired either in person at the youth services desk or in limited numbers, online beginning 10 a.m. the day of registration.

• How About A Story will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Storyteller Denise Berry-Hanna returns to the stage to tickle the ears with a funny and heartwarming collection of traditional folk tales and original favorites. Registration has begun.

• George Washington Follies will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 18. With the help of audience members and famous leaders of long ago, George Washington decides how to lead the new country known as the United States of America. Registration is required.

Adult book discussion: The adult book discussion meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room.

Books are available at the circulation desk the month before the discussion. Refreshments are served, and new members or visitors are welcome.

On Saturday, the topic will be "Winter Solstice" by Rosamunde Pilcher.

Winter solstice, the shortest day of the year represents darkness and also hope, renewal and rebirth. Five different people come together in this setting, ranging in age from teenagers to mid-60s, each of whom must confront different challenges or losses.

Sunday afternoon series: Suenõs Latin Jazz will perform an afternoon of music that combines virtuosic jazz improvisation with Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Led by bassist Steve Hashimoto, the band features some of Chicago's finest jazz musicians. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to attend.

Board meetings: The regular meetings of the board of trustees of the Lake Villa District Library for the rest of fiscal year 2007-08 are as follows:

Novel thoughts: Novel Thoughts is a book discussion group for fourth- through sixth-graders that meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at in the library's conference room. Registration is ongoing, and space is limited. On Jan. 16, "People of Sparks" by Jan DuPrau will be discussed.

Friends news: Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in meeting room A. Also, the Friends will hold its storage overstock sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 25 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 26 in meeting room A. The sale will include books and audio-visual items.

Wonders of Namibia: Enjoy an armchair tour of the natural wonders of Namibia presented by Jeff Mishur at 1 p.m. Jan. 17. Mishur will present highlights of his 2007 adventure in Namibia, featuring photographs of and commentary on the towering apricot-colored dunes of the Namib Desert. Other highlights include the landscape of Damaraland, game drives in Etosha National Park and petroglyphs at the UNESCO world heritage site of Twyfelfontein. Refreshments will be served.

Friday Fun Faire: Three-year-olds through kindergartners can enjoy a story and make a craft. Adult supervision is required. Register for sessions at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Jan. 18; 9:15 or 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Feb. 8; or 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Feb. 22.

Ellis Island Experience: Join Dan Niemiec as we look at the Ellis Island experience from the point of view of the immigrant at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 19.

Niemiec also will explain how their descendants can find genealogical information from the passenger manifest and other documents immigrants left behind on their way to American citizenship.

The Write Stuff: Third- through sixth-graders are invited to join this group the third Saturday of each month for a series of hour-long creative writing workshops.

The group will explore different kinds of writing throughout the year, with the goal of creating a literary magazine.

• Registration has begun for "See Your Name in Print!" Talk about getting published with local author Lorijo Metz at 1 p.m. Jan. 19.

• Registration begins Jan. 19 for "In the Beginning ..." Learn how to start stories with a bang, at 1 p.m. Feb. 16.

• Registration begins Feb. 16 for "And They Lived Happily Ever After ...?" Discuss how to write the perfect ending at 1 p.m. March 15.

• The library is taking submissions for the very first edition of "The Write Stuff" Literary Magazine. To be published in early 2008, the magazine will include work from participants in The Write Stuff creative writing workshops as well as a limited number of "at-large" authors in third through sixth grade. Ask for more information at the Youth Services Reference Desk.

Mardi Gras silent auction: The Lake Villa District Library Foundation'd second annual Mardi Gras Silent Auction will run Jan. 27 to Feb. 2.

Help the Lake Villa District Library Foundation bring a Samsung 40-inch display monitor with MagicNet software to the library. The display board will be used for library programs, the meeting room calendar and community events.

The auction will open at 1 p.m. Jan. 27 and close at 4 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Read to Feed: Once again children 3 years old though sixth grade can read for charity.

The library's winter reading program, Read to Feed, will run through Jan. 31.

Tally reading time on reading logs available at the youth services desk, and the library will donate up to $5 per child to Heifer International.

For 60 years. this organization has provided a living loan of an animal along with the training to take care of it to impoverished families around the world. Help buy a cow, a goat, a sheep or even a water buffalo.

Midway Ramblers: The Midway Ramblers will perform Cajun music, Zydeco and Louisiana blues at 2 p.m. Feb. 2. All are welcome to attend.

Library hours: The library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
