Red light cameras possible

Des Plaines aldermen will today consider whether to add cameras to catch drivers who run red lights. Police are considering the technology at some intersections. A private company would post the cameras, and violators would be fined for running red lights if caught by the automated cameras. They've become increasingly popular in the suburbs. Rosemont is among towns that already have such cameras in use. The technology will be discussed at the city council meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at city hall, 1420 Miner St.

No televised meeting today

Tonight's Arlington Heights Village Board meeting won't be televised on local cable channels because of a light agenda, said Community Relations Coordinator Nancy Kluz. The village saves about $2,500 each time it skips a taping. That money will be used for special announcements and videos that will broadcast on the channel, Kluz said. For those who want to catch the meeting live, it starts at 8 p.m. at the Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road.

Quit smoking in Hoffman

In the wake of the Illinois Clean Air Act, which bans cigarette smoking in public places, the village of Hoffman Estates and St. Alexius Medical Center are offering a class to help smokers kick the habit. The six-week class starts Jan. 16 and meets at village hall, 1900 Hassell Road. The cost is $50, which covers all family members, as families are encouraged to quit together. To register, call the hospital at (847) 253-9426.
