Hawaii's Jones mulls future
June Jones spent Sunday night trying to decide whether to accept an offer to coach SMU or return to Hawaii, where the governor is among those trying to keep him.
"It's been a wild day," agent Leigh Steinberg said. "I haven't seen anything like this before. It's emotionally wrenching for June."
Jones was in Dallas meeting with SMU officials and the search committee that has been working since late October to hire a replacement to Phil Bennett. Meanwhile, the folks on the island were doing all they could to get him to say no and continue leading a program he has guided to national prominence.
-- Central Florida's Kevin Smith, the nation's leading rusher this season, changed his mind and will turn pro, he has confirmed. Smith challenged Barry Sanders' NCAA season record of 2,628 rushing yards, but finished 61 yards short.
Ex-NBA star Rider arrested: Former NBA star Isaiah Rider was in custody Sunday on outstanding arrest warrants after Berkeley, Calif., police responded to a report of a disturbance between a taxi driver and a passenger.
Officers arrived on the scene to find the passenger was Rider. They arrested him on a no-bail warrant issued by Oakland police for unlawful firearm possession and another warrant for grand theft. Berekeley police say the basketball player, who retired in 2002, is currently in custody at the city's jail.
The 36-year-old Rider has a history of arrests, including a 2006 Marin County case in which he pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and battery.
Bad slalom day for Americans: Austrian Mario Matt won the men's World Cup slalom Sunday at Adelboden, Switzerland. while American Ted Ligety crashed and Bode Miller failed to finish the first run.
Matt, a slalom specialist, finished with a total time of 1 minute, 48.45 seconds at the Kuonisbaergli course, 0.10 seconds ahead of teammate Benjamin Raich. Felix Neureuther of Germany was third, 0.14 seconds back.
Ligety, who also crashed Saturday, had tied for third in the first run in soft snow conditions. Meanwhile, Miller made an error at one of the first gates, then lost his footing a second time and failed to finish. On Saturday, he missed a gate during the first run of the giant slalom.
