Three injured in three-car collision in Sugar Grove
An elderly Chicago man is hospitalized in stable condition after he drove his 2007 Ford Focus east in the westbound lane of Route 56, west of Golf View Drive in Sugar Grove.
Two others were injured in the collisions that occurred at 5:50 p.m. Friday.
The driver of the car has been identified as Sam P. Stamper, 89.
According to police, Stamper's vehicle first struck a 2006 Ford Focus driven by Leann E. Rogers, 44, of East Charles Street in Plano.
Stamper's vehicle then hit a 2006 Chrysler 300, injuring the driver, Cynthia J. Rafferty, 53, of Glenview Drive in Earlville.
Stamper was taken to Provena Mercy Hospital in Aurora and then to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. A spokesperson for the hospital reported Saturday that he is in stable condition.
Rogers also was taken to Mercy, and was released Friday. Rafferty was taken to Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva and released Saturday morning. There were no passengers in any of the three vehicles.
The crash still is under investigation. According to Sugar Grove police investigator John Sizer, it is not known why Stamper began driving on the wrong side of the road. Route 56 is a four-lane divided highway.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Sugar Grove Police at (630) 466-4526. Illinois State Police assisted in the on-scene investigation and Kane County emergency management helped with traffic control.
