Cubs trade Pagan for Mets prospects

The Cubs sent outfielder Angel Pagan to the New York Mets for a pair of minor league prospect, right-handed pitcher Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.

Meyers, 22, was 1-4 with 13 saves and a 2.79 ERA in 41 relief appearances between New York's Single-A Savannah and Port St. Lucie affiliates in 2007. The 6-foot-5, 204-pound Meyers struck out 55 batters and walked only 16 in 51ˆ¿ innings while limiting opponents to a .229 batting average.

Meyers spent most of the season as the closer with Savannah, where he recorded all 13 saves with a 2.14 ERA and .185 batting average against. Meyers is 6-19 with 15 saves and a 4.36 ERA (115 ER/237ˆº) in 104 minor league appearances (26 starts). He was selected by the Mets in the 17th round of the 2003 Draft.

Coles, 25, batted .286 with 14 doubles, 1 home run and 31 RBI during three stops in the Mets minor league system last year, including his first trips to Double-A and Triple-A. The left-handed batter and thrower spent most of the 2007 season with Double-A Binghamton and batted .296 with a .352 on-base percentage in 66 contests. Coles also played 23 games with Port St. Lucie and nine games with Triple-A New Orleans last year.

Coles earned 2006 Florida State League All-Star honors when he batted .341 in 124 games with Port St. Lucie, and a .407 on-base percentage. A career .306 hitter in (452-for-1479) in 397 minor league games, the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Coles was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2003 Draft.

Pagan, whom the Cubs originally acquired from the Mets for a cash consideration on Jan. 25, 2006, batted .255 with 9 home runs and 39 RBI in 148 games with the Cubs in 2006 and 2007. He began the 2007 season with Triple-A Iowa before his recall to Chicago on May 10. He batted .264 with 4 home runs and 21 RBI in 71 games before going on the disabled list on Aug. 8 with colitis.
