Dist. 300 parents will be able to monitor students' progress online

Whether you've been naughty or nice, your parents will now know about it.

Community Unit District 300 is launching a Web site that will allow parents to access their kids' grades, class schedules, attendance records and other information that could get you grounded.

The Web site is an extension of the district's existing Infinite Campus system, an online database where teachers take attendance, enter grades and look up parents' contact information.

"We're excited about this," said Carole Cooper, District 300's director of assessment and accountability. "We want this to be seen as an ever-growing partnership with our parents."

This year, parents will be able to register online, choose a username and password, log on to the secure site and view everything from standardized test scores to immunization histories.

All parents can access data as far back as the 2004-05 school year, but parents of elementary-age children won't be able to access as much information -- at least not yet, officials say.

That's because the district's elementary school teachers use standards-based grading, which doesn't assign letter grades. District officials are hoping to develop a way to display standards-based grades on Infinite Campus.

While students won't be able to access the site this academic year, district officials said they may be able to log on next year and even register for classes online.

A pilot group of 30 district administrators and employees who have children in the district, including Superintendent Ken Arndt, tested the Parent Portal last year to help work out the kinks.

The tentative launch date for the Parent Portal is Feb. 5, though district officials said technical issues could delay the launch until March or April.

You can access the Parent Portal and register to use the site at www.d300.org/web/parents/parentportal.html.
