Arlington Heights stuff on sale -- cheap!

Since 1993, Arlington Heights Village President Arlene Mulder has sat in the same high-backed red leather chair behind a large wooden desk in her office.

For her, these items are priceless.

For online shoppers, the price was $8 as of Thursday.

"What?" Mulder said when told of the price. "Did you say $8? For everything? That's a pretty good deal for some furniture with a lot of history behind it."

Mulder and other village employees will move into a new $30 million village hall in a few weeks where mostly new furniture will be awaiting them. Almost 300 pieces of old furniture are being sold online. The auction began Wednesday and ends Jan. 14.

Mulder's office package includes her desk, chair, computer table and book shelf. Two people have bid on the package, with the highest bid being $8. Village employees and officials aren't allowed to bid.

The desk goes back more than 40 years and the chair was bought especially for Mulder when she took office 15 years ago. A picture of the desk online shows it with a few scattered awards and Mulder's Diet Pepsi on top.

"I would guess I'm the fifth mayor to sit behind it," she said of the desk. "It's got a few dings, but it's in good shape."

Other items on sale include file cabinets, refrigerators, garbage cans, couches, tables, computer tables and more. Mulder's office isn't the only good deal. The top bid for a full-size refrigerator was $6 Thursday.

Village employees have been working out of a temporary village hall for about two years while the old village hall was torn down and the new hall constructed. The new village hall at 33 S. Arlington Heights Road will open to the public Jan. 22, Assistant to the Village Manager Diana Mikula said.

Both the temporary village hall -- 3436 N. Kennicott Drive -- and the new village hall will be closed Jan. 18 and Jan. 21 while employees move.
