Gordon, Indiana get past Iowa
Freshman Eric Gordon scored 25 points, D.J. White had 16 points and 15 rebounds and No. 11 Indiana held off a furious late rally by host Iowa for a 79-76 victory Wednesday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Jamarcus Ellis added 15 points for the Hoosiers (12-1), who won their eighth straight.
The Hawkeyes (7-7) gave Indiana all it could handle despite missing two starters, but the Hoosiers went on an 11-1 run late in the second half then survived a late barrage of 3-pointers by Iowa's Justin Johnson to snap a three-game losing streak at Iowa.
Johnson hit six 3s in the final 1:56, the last a 40-foot bank shot that brought Iowa within 78-76 with 4.8 seconds left.
Lance Stemler then missed the second of two free throws, but Indiana stole the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the win.
Johnson, who was 8-of-13 from 3-point range, finished with 29 points.
Iowa took a 4-point lead early in the second half, but Stemler followed a tip-in by Ellis with a 3 to give Indiana a 47-44 lead with 12:04 left. The Hoosiers never trailed again.
Tony Freeman added 12 points for Iowa, which played its first game without promising freshman forward Jarryd Cole. He is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee.
The Hawkeyes also lost freshman starter Jake Kelly, who left with an apparent ankle injury early in the first half and did not return.
N. Carolina 90, Kent State 61: Tyler Hansbrough scored 25 points to lead No. 1 North Carolina past visiting Kent State.
Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson both had 17 points for the Tar Heels (14-0), who never trailed in their fourth straight victory by least 25 points.
Despite being without three members of the rotation, North Carolina displayed enough depth to extend its best start since opening with 17 victories a decade ago. The Tar Heels also matched their longest winning streak under coach Roy Williams -- whose 2004-05 team won 14 straight on its way to the school's last national championship.
Haminn Quaintance tied a career high with 20 points for Kent State (10-3), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Pittsburgh 96, Lafayette 75: Keith Benjamin and Tyrell Biggs, playing much more for Pittsburgh with two starters injured, led the host Panthers' second-half comeback.
Benjamin scored 20 points and Biggs and Sam Young both had 19 to help Pittsburgh (12-1) bounce back from an 80-55 loss at No. 20 Dayton on Saturday and overcome Lafayette's 17 3-pointers, a record for a Pitt opponent.
Matt Betley was 6-of-6 on 3s and had 20 points for the Leopards (8-5).
Texas 67, TCU 59: Damion James scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead No. 14 Texas.
D.J. Augustin added 20 points for the host Longhorns (12-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Henry Salter scored 19 points to lead TCU (8-5), which hit 12 3-pointers.
Mississippi 86, Alabama A&M 50:ŒDavid Huertas scored 17 points and No. 18 Mississippi won its school-record 13th straight game.
The host Rebels (13-0) opened the game with a 13-0 run and led the Bulldogs (3-7) by as many as 28 points late in the first half.
Dayton 83, Akron 81 (2 OTs):ŒLondon Warren scored 6 points in the second overtime, including a big free throw, to lift No. 20 Dayton.
The host Flyers (12-1), who entered the Top 25 for the first time this season on Monday, extended their winning streak to 11 games.
Kurt Huelsman led the Flyers with 18 points, while Brian Roberts added 17 and Marcus Johnson 16.
Jeremiah Wood led the Zips (10-3) with 21 points.
Rhode Island 94, Fairleigh Dickinson 63: Jimmy Baron scored 22 points to lead five Rhode Island players in double figures and the host Rams extended their winning streak to nine games.
Rhode Island (14-1) is off to its best start since 1946-47, and remains undefeated at home this season.
Manny Ubilla of Fairleigh Dickinson (4-7) set a Ryan Center record with a career-high 39 points.
Wisconsin 70, Michigan 54: Reserve freshman Jon Leuer scored a career-high 25 points and Marcus Landry added 15 for No. 25 Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
The visiting Badgers (11-2) have won five straight games and their only losses are to Top Ten teams -- Marquette and Duke.
Freshman Manny Harris had 16 points and DeShawn Sims added 13 for the Wolverines (4-9).
Drake 61, SIU 51: Josh Young scored 24 points to lead host Drake, matching the Bulldogs' best-ever start and snapping a 17-game losing streak against the Salukis.
Young was 7-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs (11-1, 2-0 Missouri Valley) were leading 47-43 when he sparked an 11-2 run with three free throws and a steal for a layup.
Wesley Clemmons scored 13 points for Southern Illinois (6-7, 1-1), 11 coming in the first half. Bryan Mullins added 9 points.
Chicago St. 72, E. Michigan 68:ŒDavid Holston scored 26 points and Tawrence Walton hit 2 free throws with 10.8 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Cougars.
Chicago State (5-12) trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, then held off a late Eastern Michigan rally. After Jesse Bunkley's 3-point field goal with 44 seconds left brought the Eagles (4-8) to within 69-68, Walton split a pair of free throws to give the Cougars a 2-point lead.
Bunkley led Eastern with 16 points, while Justin Dobbins added 15.
Missouri St. 91, Bradley 80: Deven Mitchell scored 25 points and Dale Lamberth had a double-double to lead host Missouri State.
Mitchell scored 12 points in a 9:09 span midway in the second half to lead a Missouri State comeback after Bradley (7-7, 0-2 Missouri Valley) scored the first 13 points of the game and led 45-41 at halftime.
Bradley led 60-54 when Spencer Laurie hit three 3-pointers for Missouri State (8-6, 1-1) to narrow the Braves' lead to 66-63 with 12:03 left.
Andrew Warren led Bradley with 20 points, Sam Maniscalco had 16, Jeremy Crouch had 13 and Theron Wilson added 10.
Women
Penn State 49, Illinois 48: Illini guard Rebecca Harris hit what she thought was a game-winning layup at the buzzer, but was called for an offensive foul instead, giving Penn State a 49-48 victory over visiting Illinois Wednesday.
The final play came after Penn State's Tyra Grant converted 2 free throws with 9.9 seconds left to give the Lady Lions the lead. After an Illinois timeout, Harris drove the length of the court and laid the ball in as time expired, but was whistled for a charge against the Lions' Mashea Williams, giving Penn State a controversial win.
Illinois (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) led 30-24 at halftime, taking-off after Penn State went up by 5 with just under eight minutes to play. The Illini went on an 8-0 run, capped by a jumper by Jenna Smith to take a 24-20 lead.
