Home Depot to close suburban call center

Hundreds of suburban workers got the news this holiday season that their jobs are being cut, according to the Warn Report, in which companies warn the state of Illinois of impending layoffs.

Countrywide Financial cited "economic conditions" in the home mortgage industry for the elimination of 127 jobs in Rolling Meadows.

The Chicago-based printing firm R.R. Donnelley said it will be consolidating its operations in February, cutting 55 jobs at its Arlington Heights facility.

"Some of those people in these positions will be going to other positions within the company," said spokesman Doug Fitzgerald, adding those leaving the firm will be given severance, outplacement assistance and continued benefits.

Also in Arlington Heights, The Home Depot store support center is laying off 110 people who assisted in pricing quotes and expedition of projects.

Spokesman Steve Holmes said Home Depot's regional office will remain operational with more than 75 employees. However, the attached call center will be closed, he said.

"We're bringing some of their functions (of the call center) in to our stores," said Holmes, to increase customer relationships.

Some of the layoffs on the December report were previously announced, including the 1,096 jobs being cut from the Belvidere Chrysler plant. Chrysler last month announced its intention to eliminate its third shift. The first layoffs begin at the end of this month.
