So much insanity, so little space

Dec. 9: So much insanity to write about and so little space. The Herald's sudden fascination with tithing, Oprah's over-hyped endorsement of Barack Obama, Ruben Navarrette's naive nonsense over English-only laws.

Hmmmm, a cornucopia of kookiness. OK, let me take a shot. What believers give or don't give is between them and their creator. Obama was elected to represent the people of Illinois in the U.S. Senate, and all he has done since he got there is run for president. (Oh, and by the way, I was reading a long time before Oprah discovered reading.)

Guess that just leaves Mr Navarette. Beginning with Jamestown and continuing though every successive wave of immigration (almost 400 years now), English has been the language of the land.

Those signs posted at the border that no one can read stating i.e. you are breaking the law by entering the nation here and in this manner? Written in English. Declaration, Constitution all that stuff? English again.

When my wife's ancestors arrived here from Germany, Sicily and Poland, they all learned English. No whining, protesting, press one for blank. They just learned it. They wanted to become Americans and that was was part of the deal.

I happen to believe Hispanics have just as much to contribute (they already are!) as anyone else who has come before them. They deserve (and must follow) a legal and level path to achievement. I encourage them and celebrate their desire to retain their language.

Insisting they learn the language will assure them the opportunity.
