This year take the plunge with style, creativity

Putting on a swimsuit to take a plunge in an icy lake might be a fun way for some to start the new year.

But those who wear a costume, or even choose to perform with a group of friends as they take the plunge, also may be rewarded.

Prizes will be given out for the first time this year to the best group and individual plungers during the city of Waukegan and Waukegan Park District's ninth annual Polar Bear Plunge, starting at 10 a.m. today at the Waukegan beach, 201 Sea Horse Drive.

David Motley, who has served as master of ceremonies at previous plunges, said the prizes celebrate creativity.

In previous years, plungers came dressed as the Blues Brothers, while others came as superheroes. One group ran into the water carrying toilet bowl plungers and called themselves … the plungers.

"They carried it like they were carrying the Olympic torch," said Motley, who is the city's director of public relations and marketing.

A prize also will be awarded to the person who travels the farthest, Motley said.

Last year, 1,000 people showed up to watch more than 500 contestants take the plunge. Participants ranged in age from 8 to 70.

"They get to see different costumes and see different themes people come with every year. It's very funny to see," Motley said.

The cost to take the plunge is $15 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County.

Julie Schneider, manager of special recreation services, said the money will help provide scholarships. Last year, 12 athletes received scholarships to attend day camp. The money also helps outfit athletes with uniforms and equipment and cover costs for entry fees and travel expenses to join various tournaments and Special Olympics events year round.
