Cruise ship hits iceberg
A Norwegian Hurtigruten Group ASA cruise ship, carrying 247 passengers and 71 crew members, hit an iceberg in Antarctica after its engines had shut down, sending the ferry adrift.
No one was injured in the collision, which occurred at 9:45 p.m. local time Friday near Browns Bluff, Narvik-based Hurtigruten, said Saturday on its Web site. Before the impact, the captain had started safety procedures, which included the gathering of all passengers at one location.
The MS Fram sustained "minor" damage from the collision, and the crew was able to restart the engines 30 minutes later. The ship, which was launched in April and is Hurtigruten's newest, then set out for a Chilean air base at King George Island, where the crew will investigate the engine failure and assess damage.
In November, 154 passengers and crew from the cruise ship M/S Explorer were evacuated when the ship struck ice and sank off King George Island, about 60 miles from the Antarctic Peninsula.
