Bears' explosive threat has a new name: The Devistator
The votes are in, and Chicago Bears fans have spoken. Their new favorite nickname for Devin Hester is: The Devistator.
The name -- spelled with an "i" in honor of Devin -- was proposed by 8-year-old Brandon Gitles of Glenview. Following a recent vote by Daily Herald readers on a list of proposed nicknames, Brandon will win an NFL football autographed by Hester, courtesy of the Bears.
As Brandon's father, Chuck Gitles, tells it, he and his son were watching the Bears play the Kansas City Chiefs and had been considering nicknames when Hester made his second long run of the game.
When the father remarked how devastating Hester was, Brandon answered, "That's it! The Devistator!"
Gitles campaigned for his son's idea on his Chicago sports blog (www.ivychat.blogspot.com), and votes came in from as far as Florida.
As reader Shannon Heaton of Moline commented in support of The Devistator name: "Others are too generic, or lame. This one's got zazz."
A close runner-up in the contest was Rocket Man, followed by The Returminator.
Mr. Ridiculous and Quick 6 were distant trailers, while other nickname proposals included Touchdown, Heartbreaker and The Distance.
So come on, Devistator: Live up to your new name!
