Fire damages family's Hoffman Estates home
A Hoffman Estates family was displaced from its home on Tuesday afternoon when a fire broke out.
No injuries were reported in the blaze at 1810 Dogwood Drive but the fire caused about $150,000 in damages, officials said.
The family's son was leaving the home just after 3:30 p.m. when a passer-by stopped to alert him the house was on fire, according to Capt. Thomas Mackie.
Hoffman Estates firefighters had the fire out within about 15 minutes but the house sustained damage to the fireplace, family room, attic and two bedrooms.
All six people in the home at the time escaped unharmed.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Mackie said it began in the lower level rear fireplace.
He suggested homeowners with fireplaces make sure they are cleaned and annually inspected.
