Fire in Woodridge apartment
A fire in a Woodridge apartment on Monday caused about $20,000 in damage but no injuries, Darien-Woodridge fire officials say.
The blaze broke out around 10:30 a.m. in a second-floor unit of an apartment building at 7508 Orchard Lane.
It appears to have been caused by a cooking accident, officials say.
Two people were home at the time and safely escaped, officials said. The building was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Fire and smoke damage to the second-floor unit was extensive, officials said, and it will be uninhabitable for awhile.
Apartment management is helping the pair relocate to another unit, officials said, while the other residents were allowed to return home.
Five other departments assisted in the blaze. Officials are using the incident to remind people about dangers associated with cooking.
Safety tips include: keeping pot handles turned in over the stove, keeping pots on the back burners, never leaving the kitchen when cooking and keeping combustibles away from the stove.
