Officials looking for stolen mail in Grayslake
Officials are asking for the public's help in investigating the theft of four bags of mail in Grayslake.
Postal Inspector Robert Carlson said the bags were taken from the rear of a semi-trailer truck owned by a postal contractor.
Carlson said the bags were removed from the truck at 7:20 p.m. Dec. 17 as the truck waited at a red light at the intersection of Route 45 and Center Street.
"We are still trying to determine how the pouches came off the truck," Carlson said. "Someone must have seen something."
Carlson said all the customers affected by the theft have been identified and notified, so there is no need for anyone to be concerned their mail has been stolen.
He said the white canvas bags are lettered "U.S. Mail" and are secured with a leather strap and gold-colored lock.
He said the Postal Inspection Service is working with Grayslake police and the Lake County state's attorney's office in the investigation.
A reward of up to $10,000 is offered for information leading to the arrest of the individuals responsible, Carlson said.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Carlson at (630) 260-5335 or Grayslake police at (847) 223-2341.
