Sharpton's threat to Olympic bid
The Rev. Al Sharpton has threatened to lobby worldwide against Chicago's application to host the 2016 Olympics unless the city complies with his list of actions to thwart police brutality.
On its face, the goal seems to be a noble one, but consider the source and the motivation. To presume the reverend has the international influence to create a freckle on the complexion of world opinion is indeed ambitious.
One might wonder why the Rev. Al didn't feel a similar municipal urge when his own city of New York attempted to host the 2012 Olympics. Perhaps the Rev. Al feels more comfortable among folks who don't know him as well as his neighbors.
It's my observation that the City of Chicago is attempting to deal with the issue of police brutality. Better late than never. I hope it's sincere.
The hiring of a new police commissioner is a hopeful sign. It's odd that the Rev. Al has chosen this time to jump into the middle of the process with so much fanfare and bluster.
Just how many 15 minutes of fame does the man need?
