Three abuse cases could be divided

A hearing has been set to determine how Kane County prosecutors can wield statements from three youngsters against the ex-Aurora teacher accused of molesting them.

Robert Steck, 38, is charged with more than a dozen sex abuse offenses, which Kane County prosecutors say involve at least three victims.

Through his attorney, Steck is trying to have the case divided into two parts. He said he won't get a fair trial if testimony from the three alleged victims is used against him at the same time.

"They're going to have to prove Bob Steck did something wrong before they try to use (the testimony) in another case," defense attorney Fred Morelli said Wednesday.

Judge Philip DiMarzio is set to hear lawyers on both sides argue the matter Jan. 18

Steck, of the 900 block of Shady Lane, was first arrested last October and accused of aggravated sexual abuse and other charges involving a 14-year-old.

At the time, Steck coached basketball and wrestling at Cowherd Middle School. He is now on a leave of absence.

Additional allegations were filed in the spring, accusing him of sex acts involving two other children, both 11.

In court papers, prosecutor Justin Fitzsimmons has said the case against Steck should remain intact, in part to try to outline a pattern of targeting children for abuse.

Steck has pleaded not guilty and is free on bail.

"Even if we go to trial and get three not guiltys, his life is ruined," Morelli said.
