Nelson, Scheyer lead Duke romp

DeMarcus Nelson scored 23 points, and No. 6 Duke returned from a nine-day break for final exams with a 111-70 victory over visiting Albany on Monday night.

Sophomore Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils (10-0), who shot 60 percent and had five players score in double figures. They hit 15 of 26 3-pointers.

Duke improved to 10-0 for the sixth time in eight seasons, while Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 785th career victory to move within a game of tying Lefty Driesell for sixth on the all-time list.

Tim Ambrose scored a career-best 24 points for the Great Danes (5-5), who fell behind by double figures about 5½ minutes in and trailed by 26 points at halftime.

Marquette 80, IPFW 56: Dominic James had 17 points and six assists and Wesley Matthews added 15 points as host Marquette rolled past Indiana-Purdue Forth Wayne.

The 10th-ranked Golden Eagles (8-1) were playing their second game in three nights after playing just two games the previous two weeks due to final exams.

Jaraun Burrows had 13 points for IPFW (4-6).

Gonzaga 77, N. Colorado 57: Freshman Austin Daye scored 18 points and Micah Downs added 17 to lead No. 18 Gonzaga over visiting Northern Colorado.

Downs hit a career-high five 3-pointers in 10 attempts as the Bulldogs (9-2) overcame a slow start to coast to an easy win.

Jabrik Banks had 18 points for Northern Colorado (5-4).

Miami 89, Stetson 53: Brian Asbury scored 18 points, and No. 22 Miami won its first game as a Top 25 team in five years in rolling past viwiting Stetson (2-8).

Raymond Hicks had 15 points and James Dews added 14 for the Hurricanes (10-0), who opened the game with a 19-4 run.

USC 83, Delaware St. 54: Dwight Lewis scored 18 points and Davon Jefferson added 17 for No. 25 Southern California (73) which routed visiting Delaware State (3-6).

E. Kentucky 72, E. Illinois 69: Darnell Dialls hit a 3-pointer with 13.3 seconds left to give host Eastern Kentucky (5-5, 2-0), an Ohio Valley win over Eastern Illinois (1-9, 0-3).

Women

DePaul 90, Northern Illinois 58: Allie Quigley scored 19 points to help No. 15 DePaul match its best start at 9-0 with an easy win at Northern Illinois.

Deirdre Naughton added 16 points and Natasha Williams scored 14 for DePaul, which led 45-23 at the half.

Whitney Lowe and Shari Welton each had 11 points and Jessie Wilcox chipped in 10 points for the Huslies Illinois (3-7).

Connecticut 97, South Carolina 39: Tina Charles had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Ketia Swanier added 15 points, and No. 2 Connecticut held visitingSouth Carolina to just 1 field goal in the final 11 minutes.

UConn (8-0) also lost starting forward Kalana Greene to what team officials called a severe knee injury in the first half.

South Carolina (7-3) was led by Ilona Burgrova and Adams, who each scored 9 points.

N. Carolina 82, Coastal Carolina 58: LaToya Pringle had season highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 3 North Carolina past host Coastal Carolina.

The Tar Heels' victory was anything but easy, their 24-point lead cut in half down the stretch.

Rashanda McCants had 18 points and Elana Larkins 14 points as the Tar Heels (11-1) won their seventh straight ro0ad win over Coastal Carolina (7-3).
