Geneva officials OK adult group home
The Geneva City Council committee of the whole gave preliminary approval this week to loaning the Geneva 708 Mental Health Board $20,000 interest-free to complete its purchase of a house for use as a group home.
A formal vote is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
Adults with developmental disabilities will live in the house at 1890 South St.
The house will cost $399,000; the mental health board has saved $389,000 for the purchase over the last 18 years. It expects to close on the purchase before the end of the month.
The $20,000 will be paid back when the mental health board receives its tax levy in 2008.
The board asked for the loan because it didn't want to wait another year, and feared it wouldn't be able find another suitable home then at this price.
The mental health board, not the city, will own the house, at least until it finds an agency to run the home. The home is not likely to be refurbished and licensed until spring, said Alderman William Barclay, vice chairman of the mental health board.
The board has been talking with the Association for Individual Development about running the home. The association has group homes in other areas of Kane County, including St. Charles.
