Standoff with teen ends without injury
Police ended a five-hour standoff with a 17-year-old Batavia boy wielding a samurai sword early Thursday without any injuries.
Charges against Alex Chaffee, of 1065 North Avenue, are pending, but likely will include several charges of aggravated assault, Batavia Police Cmdr. Greg Thrun said.
Police were called to the house at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Chaffee was threatening to harm or kill family members and officers, according to police.
He already had damaged several walls and door frames in the house.
The boy's guardian and two sisters barricaded themselves in bedrooms and got out of the house through the windows, Thrun said.
After police couldn't make contact with Chaffee, the Kane County SWAT team went in and took him into custody at 3 a.m., according to police.
Chaffee, a junior at Batavia High School, was taken to Provena Mercy Center for an evaluation, where he remained Thursday.
Police will not officially charge him until he is released from there, Thrun said.
He said police and family members have no idea what caused the incident.
"From what I understand, this was very out of character for him," he said.
In addition to Batavia Police and the SWAT team, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, Geneva Police Department, St. Charles Police Department, Batavia Fire Department and Batavia Electric Department assisted at the scene.
