No injuries after student fires gun inside Chicago school

Chicago police are investigating what they say was an accidental shooting inside a classroom at a South Side high school.

Chicago Public Schools spokesman Mike Vaughn says there were no injuries.

According to Chicago police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor, a male student accidentally fired one shot inside Dunbar High School before 2 p.m. The bullet hit the ceiling and the gunman fled.

The school was placed on lockdown until about 3 p.m. while authorities secured the building.

Police and school officials say they have a suspect, but he isn't in custody.

Vaughn says the student faces automatic expulsion for bringing a weapon to school.

It isn't clear if the student would face criminal charges.

Authorities are scouring surveillance cameras to determine how the student got the gun into school.
