Illinois Department of Agriculture seizes $6 million worth of grain

CANTON -- The state has seized about $6 million worth of grain held in bins in central Illinois.

Illinois Department of Agriculture spokesman Jeff Squibb says it's suspending the Central Illinois Grain company's license for technical violations, including not having regular office hours.

Squibb says the seizure will freeze the company's assets and protect farmers who supplied the grain.

The company's on the site of an ethanol cooperative south of Canton.

Squibb says Department of Agriculture inspectors haven't been able to contact anyone from Central Illinois Grain and state officials want to protect farmers' grain stored there.

He says farmers will be compensated for any losses.
