Mundelein runs past D-C, 47-24
Having just hustled for four quarters in a basketball game, a sweaty Kelsey Weyers slipped into a dress immediately afterward.
The Mundelein senior then hustled over to the adjacent auditorium to blow her trumpet in a mandatory class band concert.
She made it in time for the second song.
"I don't know how (I did it)," a relieved and smiling Weyers said. "I feel like I have an angel over my head or something. It was crazy."
Her performance on the basketball court Thursday night was, well, music to the Mustangs' ears.
Weyers grabbed 16 rebounds and collected 6 steals in helping host Mundelein nearly double-up Dundee-Crown 47-24 in a nonconference game.
Mundelein improved to 8-2, while Dundee-Crown fell to 6-3.
"Kelsey Weyers played one of the best defensive games I've seen her play in two years of varsity basketball," Mustangs coach Brian Evans said. "I mean, she played against a big, tough girl in that Pilson girl."
Kate-Leigh Pilson, D-C's 6-foot pivot, had team bests of 7 points and 8 rebounds before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. She scored back-to-back baskets in the second quarter to pull the Chargers within 18-14, but Mundelein's Samantha Panitch answered with a long 3-pointer, starting a 9-0 run.
The Mustangs led 32-17 at halftime and were never seriously challenged in the second half.
Dundee-Crown committed 22 of its 34 turnovers in the opening half. The Chargers then sank just 1 field goal -- a 3-pointer by Robyn Staudenmaier early in the third quarter -- the entire second half.
"They were very physical," D-C coach Joe Komaromy said of the Mustangs. "Anytime -- and it was the same thing (in a loss to) Huntley -- we see that really physical kind of game, we seem to struggle. That's one of the things that we just got to work on. It's more of a mental aspect I guess of protecting the basketball more and just being a little bit more smart."
Panitch and Kelsey O'Connor (two 3-pointers) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to pace Mundelein in scoring. Panitch also had 6 steals. J.J. Sawchuk added 8 points and 6 boards.
Other than starter Toni Knar tweaking her knee and sitting out most of the game, it was a good night for the Mustangs -- especially Weyers, who also chipped in 3 points.
