Loss of a great man and a great Catholic
It has been said that the greatness of a nation is reflected in how it cares for the poorest, most unfortunate of its citizenry.
Several years ago, I was privileged to attend the funeral of two aborted babies, at which representative Henry Hyde delivered a stirring eulogy.
Imagine, this famous congressman, chairman of one of the major house committees, took time out of his busy schedule to memorialize two nameless rejected babies.
The Daily Herald's disappointing article about Henry Hyde, "part of history, good or bad" presented a biased picture of this great statesman's accomplishments.
The writer used quotes from two ultraliberals to justify criticizing Hyde for successfully pursuing the impeachment of former President Clinton.
But who can forget the image of Clinton wagging his finger at us as he denied "having sex with that woman"?
Who can forget that a president perjured himself, lying under oath?
Hyde, as a man of integrity and principle who loved his country could not do otherwise than pursue the impeachment of a man who as a part of his legacy, will always be remembered for convincing many of our youth that oral copulation is not "sex."
Henry Hyde was a true Christian and a great Catholic.
In this day and age when, especially in the political arena, the majority of our so-called Catholics (Richard Durbin and Nancy Pelosi to name two) ignore or misrepresent the true teachings of our church.
Hyde's death is a great loss to the pro-life movement and to our country.
