Buffett asks only for fair taxation

Mr. Opal of Wheaton (Fence Post, Nov. 27) totally misunderstood Warren Buffett when Mr. Buffett claimed that he should be "taxed more." Buffett was decrying the sad state of our economy and the way our government collects money to pay its bills. He is NOT saying that all taxpayers should be taxed more, just the very wealthy like himself who he believes are grossly under-taxed.

He said that his tax percentage was below that of his housekeeper. That, Mr. Opal, is what is idiotic.

Of course he pays more in dollars than his housekeeper, yet he said that his lower percentage was an outrage and wondered how middle and lower wage people can get by.

He supports eliminating the tax cuts made by the Bush administration on those that need them least, the upper income earners, and lowering the tax burden on middle and lower income earners.

To repeat, Buffett believes the middle and lower income earners are taxed way too much while the upper income earners are not taxed anywhere near enough.

Under Buffett's plan, Mr. Opal and millions of other taxpayers would pay far less and the burden of taxes would fall where they should, on those who can most afford to pay them. After all, that is exactly what a progressive tax system is supposed to do.
