Official thinks Link should stay on ballot

Despite questions about the signatures on his candidate petition, state Sen. Terry Link should stay on the upcoming Democratic primary ballot, a hearing examiner is recommending.

Political rival Jerry Johnson, a former North Chicago mayor who's set to face Link in the 30th District primary on Feb. 5, challenged Link's candidacy. He's said thousands of the signatures on the petition aren't valid, including those of dead people and of Link's two-time Republican rival for the seat.

On Saturday, witnesses and lawyers for Johnson and Link participated in a lengthy inquiry before hearing examiner Barbara Goodman, herself an attorney. Johnson attended but Link did not, Goodman said.

Although she declined to discuss the specifics of the proceedings, Goodman said she's recommending the state elections board consider Link's petition valid, which would allow him to remain on the ballot.

The elections board next meets Dec. 21 to discuss this case and others.

Johnson said his legal team plans to fight Goodman's recommendation before the elections board.

"By no stretch is it over," he said.

Link, of Waukegan, could not be reached for comment.

Johnson's own candidacy has been challenged, too.

Three Link supporters questioned signatures on Johnson's petition, and he believes enough will be disqualified to force him out of the race. The elections board hasn't ruled yet.

Johnson said he's exploring his political options, including whether to run as a write-in candidate in the Democratic primary or as an independent candidate in November's general election.

Most of the 30th District is in eastern Lake County, but it also includes a small part of northern Cook County.

No Republicans filed to appear on the Feb. 5 ballot for the 30th District seat. After the primary, the GOP can appoint a contender who would appear on the general election ballot in November.
