Mr. Shewmon's Dec. 2 letter to the editor seems to show no concern for the idea of citizens learning by being well informed. The Daily Herald's policy on printing columns on the editorial page seems to be one of giving the reader a variety of opinions on subjects of interest. It is my hope that they continue to print columns of different writers so that I can either confirm some of my beliefs or be convinced that the writer of a column knows less than I do about a subject.

I don't think that columns written by John Stossel do very much to enlighten me, but since his ideas are frequently opposite of mine, that doesn't prevent me from reading the column. I might even learn something from his column one of these times.

My assessment of the columnists appearing on the editorial page never ends with my referring to the writer as a "misanthrope" or suggesting that the writer should go live somewhere else. Read and be informed or read and question but why condemn? Our nation is supposed to be composed of an informed electorate. Continue to read and then act as proof and be a part of the "informed electorate" and don't conclude by having a "closed mind."
