Three men charged in Rolling Meadows apartment burglary

Three men, including two Harper College students, face residential burglary charges after being linked to at least one incident in their Rolling Meadows apartment complex, police said.

Rolling Meadows Sgt. Tony Gaspari said three 18-year-olds -- Quinton Thurman, Andrew C. Kelly and Shamar P. McGee -- are accused of entering a unit at the 12 Oaks at Woodfield complex on the 4000 block of Arbor Drive and stealing a DVD player, a video game system and games, a TV and a desktop computer.

The men were able to get into the unit through a door that doesn't lock securely, Gaspari said.

The trio heard of the faulty door through someone who'd lived in the unit before, Gaspari said.

That person wasn't charged.

But "these guys … knew they'd be able to get into this apartment," he said.

That burglary happened on Nov. 7; the victim apparently was also a Harper student.

The men apparently had sold some of the items by the time they were arrested, police said.

There have been four other similar burglaries at the 12 Oaks complex this fall, Gaspari said. At least two of them occurred in the buildings in which McGee and Thurman live, he said. The complex comprises several buildings.

Gaspari said Palatine police also have been investigating similar cases. That could not be confirmed by Palatine police Saturday afternoon.

Thurman, Kelly and McGee were indicted by a grand jury last week, police said. It was unclear Saturday what exact charges were laid out in the indictment, which was announced Friday at the Rolling Meadows circuit courthouse.

McGee and Kelly remain in the Cook County jail, held on bonds of $30,000 and $75,000, respectively, according to jail records. Thurman isn't listed as a jail inmate at this point.
