Hastert resigned to avoid defeat
In a letter published Nov. 25, Dick Graff presented several valid issues regarding the resignation of Congressman Dennis Hastert.
Additionally, the so-called Mr. Clean may have considered his reputation would be tarnished in another election, which could result in his embarrassment and defeat.
Mr. Hastert was one of 13 members of the House of Representatives refusing to testify in a criminal matter linked to a defense contractor who bribed former Rep. Randy Cunningham.
Hastert, along with another Illinois congressman, Jerry Weller, determined that to testify would be inconsistent with the "precedents and privileges" of the House.
The precedents and privileges of the House must also include the right to purchase land where a federally funded road happened to be planned.
