Radiography career program talk at ECC

Those interested in enrolling in Elgin Community College's new radiography program for a career in health care using x-ray equipment are encouraged to attend an upcoming information session detailing the program's requirements.

Applications are due Dec. 31 for classes beginning in May.

ECC has scheduled a group information meeting for prospective radiography students from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Alumni Room of the Student Resource Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

ECC representatives will outline the entrance requirements and admission process, describe the radiography program and explore employment options. The sessions are free, but reservations are strongly encouraged.

The demand for radiographers is expected to grow more than 15 percent through 2014, and there is an average of 134 annual openings in the five-county area surrounding ECC.

A career in radiography offers a promising future, including job stability and a competitive salary. As the American population ages and technology advances, the need for radiologic exams and procedures continues to soar, leaving the country with a growing need for qualified medical imaging professionals.

Wages are competitive to other health professionals with similar educational backgrounds -- $44,090 annually, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

In addition, many employers allow radiographers to work flexible schedules, including part-time or evenings, giving them time to attend to family, children and other personal responsibilities.

Radiographers use x-ray equipment to produce images of the tissues, organs, bones and vessels of the body. They can specialize in mammography, computed tomography (CT scans), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or other types of imaging, and can work in hospitals, clinics or physicians' offices.
