Painter concerned about Purdue's lack of effort

Purdue's last two games have followed a pattern that worries coach Matt Painter.

In both games, Purdue took a big lead against an inferior opponent in the first half, then fell behind in the second half before regrouping to pull away late.

Purdue beat visiting Ball State 70-57 Wednesday night, but the game left Painter concerned about his team's effort level.

"Ball State just played harder than we did, especially in the first half," Painter said. "They were quicker to the ball. They just did a better job, and you have to give them credit for the way they played.

"I don't feel right now that we have a team at Purdue that's playing hard."

The Boilermakers trailed Indiana State in the second half before winning 71-60 on Saturday. They trailed Ball State by 2 points in the second half before going on a 17-4 run to seize control.

Keaton Grant scored 15 points, Scott Martin scored 14 points and Tarrance Crump added 13 for the Boilermakers (5-1).

Peyton Stovall scored 14 points and Malik Perry had 13 for the Cardinals (0-7).

Ball State's tallest player was 6-foot-4, but the Cardinals outrebounded the Boilermakers 29-26.

Kansas 85, E. Washington 47: Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson dominated inside, and No. 3 Kansas (8-0) cruised to an easy victory over undersized and outmanned Eastern Washington (3-7).

G'town 70, Alabama 60: DaJuan Summers had 18 points and 9 rebounds, and No. 5 Georgetown (6-0) dominated down the stretch to beat host Alabama (4-3).

The Hoyas went on a 14-1 run after the Crimson Tide briefly took the lead in the final minutes.

Texas 88, North Texas 72: D.J. Augustin had 29 points and 10 assists and No. 4 Texas ran its record to 8-0 with a win over visiting North Texas, three days after pulling off one of the Longhorns' biggest road wins in recent years at UCLA.

A..J. Abrams added 23 points for the Longhorns, who cruised to a big early lead, and then watched North Texas cut it under 10 in the second half before pulling away down the stretch.

Maryland 74, Middle Tenn. 69: Kristi Toliver scored 19 points and started a late 11-0 run to help No. 3 Maryland (11-1) hold off visiting Middle Tennessee's upset bid.

Maryland coach Brenda Frese, who is pregnant with twins, wasn't on the bench due to an illness that swept through the team. The game was the third Frese has missed this season.

ND 86, Bowling Green 84 (OT): Charel Allen's jumper with one second left in overtime gave No. 16 Notre Dame (7-1) a win over host Bowling Green (6-1).

After Bowling Green's Kate Achter made 2 free throws to tie it at 84-84 with 27 seconds remaining, Allen drove the ball down the court and took it the top of the foul line, where she hit a 15-foot jumper for the win.
