Aurora cops probe fatal shooting

Police are investigating the shooting death of a 23-year-old Aurora man whose body was found Tuesday night under a near an east-side bridge.

Julio Gurrola, of the 900 block of Superior Street, was found about 6:30 p.m. under the High Street Bridge in the area of Reising and Jefferson streets.

He had been shot more than once, police said.

Authorities say it's likely Gurrola was shot at another location and his body then dumped under the bridge. He did not appear to have been there for very long, police said.

Police think the murder could be related to an apparent home invasion and shooting that occurred about an hour earlier on the 0-100 block of Hickory Street, also on the city's near east side.

Both incidents appear to be gang-related, officials said, but they're still trying to figure out how and if the two are connected at all.

Officers initially had gotten a call about a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot on the 0-100 block of North Smith Street.

Someone in the area told police he had heard gunshots coming from a home on Hickory Street.

When police arrived there about 5:35 p.m., they saw a 22-year-old man carrying several items from the home.

Officers also found evidence of a shooting. A 19-year-old Aurora man had been dropped off at a local hospital around 6 p.m. with a gunshot wound in his back.

His injuries aren't life-threatening, authorities said.

Police are currently questioning the 22-year-old man.

They're also asking anyone with information in either case to call (630) 801-6655 or Aurora Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.

Crime Stoppers callers may be anonymous and could qualify for a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrests of suspects in either case.
