Buffalo Grove hears plans for restaurant

A drive-through restaurant may replace a former gas station in Buffalo Grove.

The village board sent a proposal for El Pollo Loco restaurant on to the plan commission for review Monday night.

The 2,300-square-foot restaurant, proposed for 1200 Dundee Road, would seat 52 people and be next to the Strathmore Square shopping center, taking up the vacant ExxonMobil station at the Arlington Heights Road intersection.

The restaurant would be the second El Pollo Loco in the area -- the first one opened in Hanover Park just two weeks ago -- and the fourth in the state. The development company expects 30 more restaurants to open in Illinois within the next year.

Trustees Jeff Berman and Bruce Kahn said they were concerned that a full drive-through might create traffic backups on Dundee Road, which they would not want to see.

Trustee De Ann Glover said she'd also like to see a connection between the restaurant and the shopping center so that drivers wouldn't have to get on the road to go back and forth between the two.

The plan commission will look at the proposal at an upcoming meeting, and the issue will come back to the village board at a later date.
