Batavia kids to get out of school one day early

School is going to end a day early this year for Batavia students.

The last day of school -- barring any snow days -- will be Thursday, June 4, not Friday, June 5, after a school board vote last week.

The change was made because the district had not counted a day with parent-teacher conferences as a student attendance day, said Jan Wright, associate superintendent for teaching and learning.

The state counts those days as student attendance days, she said.

Bridge closure:ŒThe Wilson Street bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

Early this week, the date of the closure will be posted on www.bridgingbatavia.com and updated on the bridge hotline, (630) 845-1234. Contractors will be pouring concrete for the final bridge pier during that time.

Officials have said that contractors will not make their original completion date of Dec. 14, but hope to have both sides of the bridge open by the end of the year.

Holiday breakfast:ŒSanta will drop by Batavia on Saturday for a breakfast sponsored by the Batavia Park District.

The pancake and sausage breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. at Shannon Hall, 14 N. Van Buren St.

There will be entertainment as well, and children can get their photo taken with Santa.

Anyone interested in going has to register ahead of time. The park district can be reached at (630) 879-5235.

Home repair help:ŒIf money is too tight to make needed repairs on your home going into the winter months, the Mid-Valley Neighborhood Improvement Association might be able to help.

The not-for-profit group runs an emergency home repair fund for limited-income residents in the Tri-Cities. They can help with most home repairs and furnace replacement.

Eligibility is based on income and family size.

For more information, contact the group at (630) 584-1996 or kathy@mvnia.org.
