Briefs: Park class signup starts

Resident registration for Fox Valley Park District winter youth programs begins at 8:30 a.m. today. Nonresident registration starts Dec. 10. Pearl Harbor luncheon

Aurora University will host the 38th annual Pearl Harbor Day memorial luncheon for Pearl Harbor and Asiatic fleet survivors of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the University Banquet Hall in Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place, Aurora. The public is invited. Admission is $20. The sponsor is the Aurora Navy League Council, a veterans group. The keynote speaker is Navy Rear Adm. Jon W. Smoke-free info session:

As of Jan. 1, all Illinois businesses are required to go smoke-free. To provide answers to questions regarding the new law, the Kane County Health Department will host a free forum from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Kane County Government Center, Building A, auditorium, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. Local legislators, human resource representatives, chamber of commerce representatives, employees and anyone who oversees implementation of Smoke-Free Illinois at their workplace is welcome to learn steps to smooth the transition for both employees and customers. Wellness program information also will be available. Registration is required by calling (630) 264-7689.

Safety check nets arrests:

St. Charles police made five drunken-driving arrests and wrote 16 speeding tickets during a two-week safety campaign that ended Sunday. Officers also issued five citations and wrote 10 warnings for additional moving violations. The campaign was funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the You Drink, You Drive, You Lose program.

First Avenue to close

An underground utility repair project will close the first block of First Avenue in St. Charles for one week, beginning Monday. The Illinois Street bridge will remain open, but the westbound lane will be narrower.
