California's new law has flaws
On Oct. 12, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed six bills supporting the protection of gay, bisexual and transgender youth. The Equality California group supported those six bills.
One of the bills passed was SB777, Student Civil Rights Act bill. This bill protects students, in public schools, from being harassed and bullied. Also, it permits gay, transgender or other sexual preference students to enter and use the restroom or locker room of their choice, to feel more comfortable.
With SB777 becoming a new law, there will be backlash and huge controversial issues will appear. I think that any gay or transgender student should feel safe and relaxed in the school environment that they are in. But allowing a sexual preference student to use the restrooms of their choice is too extreme. By making some students feel more content, the law is now making other students and their parents very uncomfortable and upset.
The SB777 law doesn't seem to be exactly effective. The law protects students of a smaller majority in public schools. I think that it is wrong to allow other asexual variant students to go into the locker room of their choice. There will be some kids who will take advantage of this law. Boys have always made an excuse to get into girls locker rooms. Now they won't need any because it will be a state sanctioned policy.
