Chicago Tentet returns. Five of Chicago's acclaimed jazz improvisers make up half of reedman Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet, which celebrates its 10th anniversary with a performance Saturday at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago.

Brötzmann assembled the group (originally an octet) in Chicago in 1997 for a one-night only concert showcasing the city's best improvisers. But one night wasn't enough for the German jazzman. He expanded the group to 10 and began touring Europe and North America. Abandoning arranged scores in 2005, the group has operated as a totally improvisational ensemble ever since.

Chicago members include trombonist Jeb Bishop, bassist Kent Kessler; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, reed player Ken Vandermark and drummer Michael Zerang. The international contingent includes reed player Johannes Bauer from Germany, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson from Sweden, tuba player Per-Âke Holmlander from Norway, trumpet player Joe McPhee from the United States, drummer Paal Nilssen-Love from Sweden and Brötzmann himself.

The concert begins at 9 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $20 and are available at the MCA box office at (312) 397-4010 or online at www.mcachicago.org.
