Village extents its yard waste collection

Due to late-falling leaves, yard collection in Arlington Heights has been extended through Dec. 11 for single-family homes serviced by Groot Recycling and Waste Services.

The last collection day will be Dec. 10 for residents living north of Oakton Street and Dec. 11 for residents living south of Oakton Street.

Any remaining yard waste can be placed at the curb for pickup during Christmas tree collection, which is Dec. 31 to Jan. 8. The $1.65 yard-waste sticker must be on all bags and bundles of branches. Stickers are not required for the disposal of Christmas trees.

Check mate: The Arlington Heights Memorial Library is hosting a new chess program for kids.

Children in third grade and older can register for the "Chess for Kids" program in December. Chess Wizards will teach class from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 8 and 15 in the Lindsey Program Room.

Church honored on Sunday: The Rev. Dr. Frederick Aigner, president of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, will present the 2007 "Ministry of Hope Award" to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights Sunday.

The congregation is in its 18th year of hosting a PADS site Saturday nights, October through April. Its newest ministry is the Green Team, which promotes environmental activities such as recycling.

The church also has an older adult ministry and a program that enables congregation members to provide compassionate listening to other congregation members in need of support.

The other 2007 "Ministry of Hope" recipients are St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island and St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington.

Aigner is a former pastor at Our Saviour's.
