No. 1 N. Carolina beats OSU

Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson led a second-half surge and No. 1 North Carolina held host Ohio State without a field goal for almost 11 minutes in a 66-55 victory Wednesday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Ellington, averaging 17 points per game, scored 23, and Thompson had 14, most at critical times for the Tar Heels (6-0). Tyler Hansbrough was just 6-of-19 from the field and had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman Jon Diebler came out of a shooting slump to score 19 points for Ohio State (4-2), which had won six of its last seven games against No. 1 teams.

The Atlantic Coast Conference captured the Challenge by winning eight of 11 games.

Michigan St. 81, N.C. State 58: Goran Suton had 16 points and 12 rebounds and No,. 10 Michigan State cruised past visiting No. 24 North Carolina State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Spartans (5-1) have won 30 straight nonconference home games at Breslin Center/

J.J. Hickson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack.

Boston Coll. 77, Michigan 64: Tyrese Rice scored 28 points and had five assists Wednesday to help Boston College (5-0) to a victory over Michigan (3-4) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Penn St. 66, Virginia Tech 61. Mike Walker scored 17 points and Talor Battle hit a key bucket down the stretch as host Penn State (3-3) held off a late rally to defeat Virginia Tech (2-3) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Kansas 87, Fla. Atlantic 49: Brandon Rush scored 17 points and No. 4 Kansas (6-0) routed Florida Atlantic in a rude welcome back to Allen Fieldhouse for Rex Walters.

One of the more popular players of the Roy Williams era at Kansas, Walters is in his second season as head coach at Florida Atlantic. The Owls (1-6) had 14 points apiece from Carderro Nwoji and Sanchez Hughley.

Georgetown 66, Old Dominion 48: Roy Hibbert had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Georgetown (4-0), which took control in the second half to win at Old Dominion (3-4).

The Hoyas got 4 points each from Jonathan Wallace and Patrick Ewing Jr. and three from Hibbert in an 11-1 run to start the second half, opening a 41-24 lead with 16 minutes to play.

Texas 98, Texas Southern 61: Damion James had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Texas ran its record to 6-0 with a win over visiting Texas Southern.

D.J. Augustin added 20 points for the Longhorns, who turned 24 turnovers by Texas Southern (1-5) into 34 points.

Kevin Abanobi and Anthony Ike both scored 15 points for Texas Southern, which hit 12 3-pointers.

Texas A&M 76, Alabama 63: Donald Sloan had 15 points and eight assists to help No. 9 Texas A&M remain undefeated.

Alabama (3-2) stayed with the Aggies (7-0) got within 2 points early in the second half, but wouldn't get any closer.

UIC 65, Cent. Michigan 52: Scott VanderMeer had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead visiting Illinois-Chicago (3-3) past Central Michigan (0-5).
