Anna Miller's letter provides hope
I am writing in response to the Nov. 23 Fence Post letter from high school student Anna Miller of Gurnee. Anna is too young to remember but our President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, said the following in 1953:
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
I remember this quote because my mother had it taped to the bathroom mirror of our home for as long as I can remember. My mother was an inspiration. She lived a fruitful life as a mother of 6, school teacher, community volunteer and advocate for the disadvantaged. Anna should know you do not have to grow up to be president to make a difference. In this season of thanks and remembrance, Anna's letter gives me hope.
