CLC students take learning global
College of Lake County recently signed a partnership agreement with Xi'an International Studies University, in Xi'an, China, to provide CLC students and faculty with new global learning opportunities.
A Chinese language immersion program is planned for summer 2008, followed by a full semester abroad program in China during the fall semester. Informational meetings on both opportunities will be held in the coming months.
Both study abroad programs offer affordable tuition and fees, with scholarships and financial aid available to qualified students.
As part of the fall 2008 study abroad program, CLC students will study at XISU, taking courses in English from international faculty in a variety of disciplines. Students will live with a Chinese family or in a university dormitory.
A CLC faculty member will accompany the students and teach two courses.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to take Chinese coursework. Classes are available at all levels of Chinese proficiency, from beginner to advanced speaker. Applications for the study abroad program are due by March 1.

In addition to the study abroad opportunity, the partnership with XISU will provide CLC with a visiting faculty member for the spring 2008 semester. The faculty member will teach Chinese language and culture courses and assist in developing programs designed to increase the knowledge about China to the CLC community.
The establishment of East Asian curriculum and study abroad opportunities has been made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Project leaders include Dr. Li-hua Yu, project director, and Audrey Iffert, project coordinator. For more information, or to apply for the program, call Iffert at (847) 543-2456.
CLC will also offer a Chinese language immersion program in summer 2008. This session will be held May 20 to July 1 and is sponsored by the CLC International Studies Program.
Students will be able to begin learning Chinese or improve their skills by taking Chinese language and culture classes on the campus of a Chinese university in Xi'an. The Chinese immersion program also includes visits to three major Chinese cities, Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, and their cultural and historical attractions, such as the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Terra Cotta Soldiers Museum and many others.
Informational meetings on the summer immersion program will be held at the CLC Grayslake campus at 6 p.m. on Thursday in room C130 and at 6 p.m. on Jan. 24 in room B122. For more information, contact George Liu at (847) 543-2948 or via e-mail at gliu@clcillinois.edu.
