Man attacks brother, mom in St. Charles
Bond was set at $125,000 Monday for a man accused in an attack on his younger brother and their 75-year-old mother Saturday in St. Charles.
Charles F. Miller, of 303 Superior Ave., Machesney Park, is charged with felony counts of home invasion, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery, and three misdemeanor counts of resisting police.
The 50-year-old was intoxicated when he became enraged during an argument with his brother shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday on the 500 block of Cedar Avenue, according to a police report.
Miller then smashed his brother's head through a 50-gallon glass aquarium containing a pet snake and violently "bear hugged" his elderly mother, injuring her, police said.
Officers said Miller was difficult to get under control.
He was locked out of the house once by his mother, but returned after breaking a glass back door, police said.
Officers also used Tasers twice on Miller in unsuccessful attempts to get him to calm down, police said.
He eventually was carried from the house to a stretcher, where he was restrained and given medical sedatives, according to a report.
Police said the elderly victim was treated for scratches to her arm, while the brother, 42, received seven staples to close a large cut on his head at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva.
Meanwhile, tests showed Miller was drunk and had cocaine in his system at the time of the attack, police said.
If convicted of the most serious charge, home invasion, Miller faces between six and 30 years in prison. His next court date is Dec. 7.
Court records show Miller was accused of trespassing in Aurora in 1994, but the case was later dismissed.
Miller appears to have no other criminal history in Kane County, although his mother told police he has been arrested several times for drunken driving, according to an arrest report.
