Grayslake Park District notes

Making Time for Dinner: This class will help participants learn how to organize the week, plan meals and prioritize days. Participants will go over nutrition briefly, and learn helpful cooking tips organizing tips and shopping tips. Participants will have an opportunity to purchase resources at class to guide in this process. Register for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 5. Class is for adults ages 16 and over and will be held in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. Cost is $30 for residents and $37.50 for nonresidents

Basic first aid: This class is for anyone age 16 and older who would like to learn techniques or refresh their memory on how to safely administrate basic first aid. Class will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Grayslake Fire Station, 160 Hawley St.

Learn how to implement basic first aid techniques that covers a variety of injuries. All participants are eligible for an American Heart Association certification that is valid for two years. Participants must pick up a book at the park district office prior to class. Cost is $32 for residents and $42 for nonresidents.

Open gym: Come and play informal pick up games with friends or spend time with family. All equipment will be provided. Family open gym is not a drop off program. Any children 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years or older at all times.

The park district offers the following open gyms in the new recreation center gym:

• Men's 18 and over from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays.

• Men's Over 35 from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursdays.

• Family -- All Ages, from 4 to 6 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

• Fifth through eighth grade, from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays.

• High school, from 9 to 11 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 7 p.m. Sundays.

There will be no open gyms on Dec. 25. The schedule is subject to change. Contact the park district to verify.

Cost (payable at the door) for family open gym is $3 per person. The cost for other open gyms is $5 per person.

Volleyball camps: This 3-day camp will concentrate on passing, setting and spiking, as well as lots of game-situation drills. All students will receive a "Volleyball Pro" evaluation and a camp T-shirt. Camp will be held Wednesday to Friday Dec 26 to 28 at the Grayslake Park District Rec Center. Classes will be divided by age:

• Kindergarten through second grade: 11 am to noon cost $30 for residents and $38 for nonresidents.

• Third through sixth grade: noon to 1:30 p.m., cost $45 for residents and $56 for nonresidents.

• Seventh and eighth grade: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., cost $60 for residents and $75 for nonresidents.

Register by Dec. 12.

Little Hoopsters: This fundamental league will provide an opportunity to learn the skills of Basketball in a low key, non-competitive atmosphere. Volunteer parents will coach this league. Interested coaches should fill out the Coaches Sign Up Sheet and drop off at the Park District Office. Kids will work on skills and drills, and play a fun game each Saturday (one hour per week, start times will vary) from Jan. 5 to Feb. 23. Each child will receive a T-shirt (note size at time of registration). Game schedules and team selection will be mailed out and also posted on the Web site by Jan. 2. This program will be run at Woodview and Prairieview Schools. Children will be separated by age. Cost is $60 for residents, $75 for nonresidents. Register by Dec. 21.

Men's winter basketball leagues: Adult teams (ages 18 and up) will play a minimum 10-game season with a season-ending tournament. IHSA rules will be used and all games will be officiated. There will be an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Rec Center. All teams interested in playing must send a representative. For more information, call Nate Flannery at (847) 223-7529. Register by Dec. 12th. Games will be played Sundays, Jan. 13 to April 6 at Grayslake Central High School. There will be no games on Feb. 3. Games times will vary each week, with 2 to 8 p.m. starts. Cost is $625 per resident team, and $675 per nonresident team.

Men's open basketball: Play informal pickup games this winter and spring. This is a drop in program for adults ages 18 and up. Basketballs are provided. from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sundays, Jan. 6 to May 18 at Grayslake Central High School. (No Open Gym March 2, 16 and 23). Cost is $5 per person at the door.
