Wheeling lights spirit of the season
Wheeling officials called their tree-lighting ceremony on Sunday, the "Lighting of the Lights," and it's no wonder.
With the flip of a switch, nearly a quarter of a million lights came on throughout the village, including 138,000 alone at Friendship Park and the three surrounding corners at the intersection of Milwaukee and Dundee roads.
Nearly 200 people huddled inside the park's gazebo, warmed by an outdoor patio heater and the seasonal music of a Wheeling High School brass quartet playing carols.
Wheeling Village President Judy Abruscato led the countdown, before the park came alive with its nearly 50 trees illuminated, and colorful skaters, carolers and toy soldiers dotting the perimeter.
Even its fountain, which draws residents throughout the spring and summer for photo opportunities, features a simulated waterfall, powered by lights. Still, for all of the children on hand, the lights were overshadowed by the arrival of the evening's special guests, Santa and Mrs. Claus.
They arrived in a motorcade down Dundee Road, with a police escort and riding on board a fire engine, with their lights and sirens blaring.
The appearance of the jolly old elf drew families like Kaye Janus of Wheeling, who gathered with her two daughters, Verra Rudolfi of Wheeling and Kara Janus of Arlington Heights and their little ones.
"It's a chance to see Santa," Kaye Janus said, of braving the cold winter temperatures to come out.
The lights and Santa's arrival also drew Jen Lehmann and her 2-year old twins to return to Wheeling after moving one month ago to Huntley.
The widow of 2-term Wheeling trustee, Trevor Lehmann, said they wouldn't miss it.
"Even though we've moved away, this is still our holiday tradition," Lehmann said.
Her husband led the drive to establish the $1.27 million park, which was dedicated five years ago, and patterned after the fountain and park in Rosemont.
Abrascato said the park has lived up to its billing, providing a gathering place and visual gateway into the village.
"It's a real focal point, with the gazebo and the fountain," Abruscato said. "Ever since we opened it, it's brought people together and now helps to kick off the holiday season."
