Downtown Batavia to hold arts, scavenger hunt events
With Thanksgiving past, it's time to start thinking about Christmas celebrations.
Batavia's Mistletoe Magic event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 7.
Downtown businesses will hold an Arts Walk with refreshments, sales and live music. The walk starts at Allen + Pepa Architects at 8 W. Wilson St.
Free photos with Santa will be provided by Rose Photo Studio from 5 to 9 p.m.
The Batavia Depot Museum will hold a Yule Log Scavenger Hunt starting at 6:30 p.m. Clues will send teams to downtown historical sites and eventually to the burning yule log, cookies and cocoa.
Clues might be historic, poetic or something that team has to do to get the next clue.
Artists and musicians are still needed for the event. For more information, call Britta McKenna at (630) 761-3528 or e-mail at britta@downtownbatavia.com.
Holmstad filmed:ŒThe Alzheimer's Association filmed at the Holmstad retirement community earlier this month for a national training video on dementia care.
The Holmstad has an assisted-living neighborhood designed for people with memory loss.
A film crew took footage of caregivers demonstrating the CARES technique -- which stands for Connect with the resident, Assess behavior, Respond appropriately, Evaluate what works and Share with the team.
The focus of the program includes training in communication, socialization and pain management.
The film crew also interviewed staff and family members to talk about the emotional impact.
Plans for the future:ŒAnyone interested in finding out more about the city's comprehensive plan can attend an open house at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
The document includes plans for zoning, open space, city facilities and transportation. City staff will be on hand to answer residents' questions.
At 7:30 p.m., the plan commission will hold a public hearing where anyone can comment on the plan.
The entire plan is available online at www.cityofbatavia.net.
Donate to troops:ŒThe Avon store at 241 W. Wilson Street will have an open house and USO Care Package Fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Residents can sponsor a USO Cares gift set for a soldier abroad.
There also will be pictures with Santa from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
